Saga Pearl 2 to the Canaries

Postby tomvet » 28 Mar 2016 22:50

Am enjoying keeping up with your Canary Island cruise, Lesley. We loved our visits to Lanzarote and Teneriife plus Madeira last November. I would love to do another CI cruise taking in the lesser visited and known Islands. If Fuerteventura is half as good as Lanzarote then it must be great.

33 miles to Lanzarote from Fuerteventura and taking 12 hours to get there. I take it you will be bobbing around in circles for the most of the night then!

Not very environmentally friendly is it!

So pleased to hear you are enjoying warm sunny weather in the Canaries. Never been to Feuteventura but would like to one day. Nice cruise ships stop there. Enjoy the rest of your trip and thanks very much for taking time out to post on the forum.

Sorry but weather has been erratic and affected internet connections. Tue was Lanzarote - we had no excursions booked. Looking at the ship locator on board, we had done a big semi-circle overnight heading towards the African coast. Temp was about 15 degrees but that strong wind was back with us and it was a really cold wind. We took the shuttle bus in Arrecife and had a wander around the marina harbour - very pretty but everything was closed and too cool to linger. Back to the ship and we did try sitting on the Sun Deck but the wind was too strong so we retreated inside and enjoyed a swim in the indoor pool.

Wednesday was Agadir and the weather when we arrived was foggy. We went off on our Immouzzer Valley jeep safari and once away from the coast, the sun broke through the clouds and it warmed up quite nicely, but was still cold in the shade. We went much further in the valley than when we did the trip before. We went right through the valley and to the village of tirgit where we had amazing views right across the valley, which was relatively green as the rainy season had recently ended. We were back on board for lunch and managed to sit out on deck in the afternoon and soak up some lovely warm sunshine.

today has been a day at sea but the weather is again not playing ball. I think the air temp was reasonable but large lumpy seas of 4-5 metres and force 6-7 winds, so nobody outside apart from the ORCA team. However, at present the forecast for Lisbon is good with light airs and temps of about 18 degrees. We are booked on a 4wd drive to Sintra and Cascais.

there has been a lot of people hit with coughs and chest infection during this cruise - even the captain had been affected. Yesterday as we left Agadir, the departure announcement was made by the Staff Captain. Today's announcements were made by "Captain Jo" - Jo Boase the cruise director. Raised quite a laugh as the captain managed to make the opening line of his blurb and then Jo took over - and her opening line was that the captain had changed sex!

we have received our disembarkation letters - we are due off at 9.20am (Tag 5) on Monday.

This has been a wonderful read... we've not cruised the Canary Islands, although we had a package holiday to Lanzarote years ago, and you've made them sound so interesting! Must hunt for these painted doors next time in Funchal... off to Google!

Well today being 1st april, Saga did their best to trick a few passengers and it worked - for some. We got our TODAY programme last night and it said we would be departing from Lisbon for . . . .BLACKPOOL! I thought, what, and then realised what the date was - but some passengers did head towards reception in a state of panic. Then there were some spurious activities mentioned - coffee corner at 3AM (!!), Hammer chipping (helping the deck crew with some maintenance) and Zimmer Frame races.

However, today was Lisbon and the weather was truly glorious. a bit chilly when we arrived - just 11 degrees - but sunny skies and it got up to about 20 degrees as the day went on. We had a wonderful tour - 4WD to Sintra and Cascais with some amazing scenery and views and even a bit of off-roading. The drivers were all very knowledgeable and spoke good English too. We drove along the coastal road that followed the river Tagus, through Cascais and then stopped at Cabo da Roca before going off road through forests and up hillsides to a mirador that overlooked Sintra and was by a memorial to some firefighters who dies whilst fighting fires in the forests in the 1960's Then we went into Sintra where we had an hour that included a coffee stop and traditional cakes in one of the cafes (included in the price of the tour) and then back along the motorway back to the ship.

CMV's Astoria was berthed just behind us this morning but left mid-afternoon. We left Lisbon at 7pm and now have two days at sea before we get back to the UK - hopefully Southampton. At present the forecast for the sea conditions are favourable. As it was our captains birthday this morning, we were all offered champagne with blueberry juice at breakfast this morning. He was a bit squaky this morning, but by this evening his voice was back to normal.
