Dave's Digital Postcards from Seine Princess and Normandy

This will be our first cruise since Christmas and our first river cruise for more than three years. We booked this cruise on the Seine from Honfleur to Paris almost a year ago and it seems to have been a long time in coming! Although we don't set off until tomorrow evening, I'll do what I always do and start my little blog using my PC then continue it with my phone later...

Actually, we won't board the ship in Honfleur until Wednesday afternoon at the earliest. The original plan was to get a ferry from Dover very early on Wednesday (or use the Tunnel) and drive to Honfleur. Then, a few weeks ago, we decided to get a Brittany Ferry from Portsmouth to Caen leaving only a short drive to Honfleur. With what's been happening at Dover recently it looks like a good change of plan!

So the holiday is now as follows: Drive from Whitstable to Portsmouth. Ferry to Caen. Drive to Honfleur and (hopefully!) leave the car in a car park next to where the ship docks. Cruise to Paris. Disembark and get a taxi to train station (Paris Saint-Lazare). Train to Deauville. Bus to Honfleur. Drive to Vire.

We've rented a house in Vire and invited the family to join us for a week. They'll be taking the Dover route so our fingers are crossed that the situation there has improved by then! For the return journey, we drive from Vire to Caen and get a Brittany Ferry back to Portsmouth... and then it's just a short drive home. It'll be interesting to see whether we or the kids get home fastest.

Arranging this holiday has been far more complicated than what we're used to doing - which usually involves making just the one phone call. At the moment we're thinking this will be our first and last DIY holiday, but if it all goes well then perhaps we'll think again. ;)

Have a great time Dave, we are looking forward to hearing all about it. We have not done a river cruise (yet!), but it is high on our 'to do' list. :)

Good luck with all your connections, Dave.

I find the description mind boggling :o We certainly would not contemplate such a journey now, and even in our early days would have avoided such a degree of DIY.

Even on our past land holidays to India, China and Russia, etc as a small group of friends we tended to decide where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see and left the nitty gritty to someone else to put together for us.

It all sounds great and I do hope it will run like clockwork for you.

I have been watching the horror tales of what is happening around Dover and wondering how many cruise passengers have been caught up in it.

I look forward to seeing the blog unfold.

Sounds just like my type of holiday bus here, train there with a plane or ferry ride in between. Have a great trip Dave and Fred, your logistical sacrifices will be rewarded by a great cruise and stay holiday.

We had a very pleasant drive to Portsmouth - the M25 has never been so clear!

The ship is very smart for a ferry and I've taken a few photos ; -)...

We've just set sail for Caen. We couldn't get a cabin so we're making do with 'sleep seats' in a 'sleeping room'! :-)
