I know this topic has been raised many times but please bear with me.

As you know I’ve had a few medical problems recently and obviously had to notify my insurance company. We use our Lloyd’s Bank account to do this and for our last cruise I had to pay an additional fee of around £55 to cover a few weeks for our cruise on The Navigator in May until the current year expired. However, in view of my latest medical problems since that cruise they refuse to keep me on the annual policy but would consider a trip by trip cover.

For our up and coming cruise in November on QV they have quoted In excess of £930. (I think as we are visiting the Caribbean this may have an impact on the figure). I did expect a big figure but I was wondering if you can suggest some other companies who deal with people like me with pre-existing medical problems that I could get quotes from.

Joan, as you know, insurance for us has always proved difficult. I've just taken out travel insurance with AllClear, we have used them previously. I got my quote and then contacted my financial advisor who also sells travel insurance. I told him the quote and he then offered me a cheaper quote with the same company, same terms and conditions. Let me know if you want his company contact details.

Have you considered Staysure Joan ( http://www.staysure.co.uk )? They seem to be specialists in insuring people with pre-existing medical conditions. Hope this is useful.

Joan. I do sympathise with you. I also find getting good insurance a pain. My last quote for a years worldwide cover including the Caribbean was £1500. I now stick to Saga cruises as they include my insurance with no problem plus pick me up from my door which is a huge bonus as I don’t have a car. Good luck. Ruth

Not Joan but Glyn, here :D

Our first cruise, back in 2014, we used Staysure. We also had ins with them when we needed to cancel our policy in 2015 when Andy was admitted to hospital. I didn't claim for loss of deposit for the cruise and they refunded me pro rata the amount I had paid for the policy. I think it was £78 back for a policy costing £250. Since then they won't touch us with a barge pole unless we insure Andy with NO pre existing conditions covered :o

Hi Joan,

During the last couple of years, we have managed to get reasonable quotes from the following companies which, for us, were as 'reasonable' as we could expect.

AllClear
Explorers
AA travel ins
Co-op travel ins

I have also found www.payingtoomuch.com very useful and, for us, certainly better that the other comparison sites.

Here's the list of all the companies that I know of that will cover for pre-existing conditions.

Thank you Glynis and Ruth for your very helpful advice. We have my daughter and two young grandsons staying this week so when they have gone home we can have a ‘quiet’ time and have a look. I have a follow up appointment in September with Cardiology so we may wait until then to get quotes. I did have an ECG last week at the Doctors and fortunately my heart is still in normal rhythm so fingers crossed it will stay that way.

there is a an insurance company call all clear i have never used them but they specialise in insurance for the profoundly disabled, those with complex health needs and those with life shortening conditions. They was mainly set up for people who had cancer but where not in remission or cancer free but where still be treated as being ill even although they had been in remission or cancer free for several years with no change. I know a few people who have found them much cheaper for same or better policy basically because they specialise in serious illnesses and know the right questions to ask. Hope you get sorted heck my dad didn't even get quoted for that for canada few years ago and hes got a heart condition, high blood pressure and about a million other things wrong with him
