Wildflowers

Postby Dave » 11 Jun 2019 14:50

Orchids are among my favourite wildflowers, in part because I rarely come across any so it's always a treat to spot some.

The only variety of orchid I've ever seen on my local walks is the Early Purple Orchid and I've been on the lookout for weeks. Checking my forum posts, I found that I spotted my first one of the year in 2017 on 21 April and last year's was on 21 May, so I was beginning to wonder where they were this year. But today, on a walk to Canterbury through our local woods, I came across a patch of them. :D

Good spot Dave. There used to be some just up the road from where I lived, always good to see them. I a nature reserve locally there are some lovely bee orchids. Used to go there most years and try and spot them.

I saw a good many Early Purple Orchids today on my walk around the White Cliffs of Dover, but I'd never seen a pure white specimen before. :D

Apparently they're very rare!

And I've seen Pyramidal Orchids before, but I don't remember seeing any in Kent until today...

You need to do some walks in Wiltshire Dave. We discovered during a quiz that apparently the orchid is the "national" flower of the county. Certainly, we have quite a few wildflower meadows around us and there are many varieties of orchids and even an area of SSS1 - specifically because of the large number of different and rare orchids it contains.
