Cruising Mates is (not!) now encrypted.

It's taken me a while to get around to doing this...

As of this afternoon, the Cruising Mates website is 'officially' secure. Depending on the browser you use, this fact is probably highlighted in some way in the address bar. This is what I see in Firefox - a little green padlock: :D

Image

Put simply (which is about as far as I understand things!), data transmitted between this site and your browser is encrypted and therefore can't be intercepted by baddies who might want to do... er, bad things.

The URLs that relate to Cruising Mates are no longer http:// [our address] but are now https:// [our address]. :geek:

In theory, whatever URL you've been using should automatically be converted (redirected) to https://www.cruisingmates.co.uk. If, however, a bookmark doesn't work or you find you can't log on, then typing 'https://www.cruisingmates.co.uk' into your address bar should do the trick. I hope.

To be honest, I hadn't thought it was particularly vital to have an encrypted forum but I discovered that Google says it's a Very Good Thing and ranks secure websites more highly. And I like the green padlock because it indicated that we've been vetted and found trustworthy.

As with any change, there might be some problems so if you are adversely affected in any way please let me know.

One problem that's been spotted is that YouTube videos aren't displaying. This is to do with the BBCode (tags in square brackets) - I'll take a look later...

I don't know if this is related Dave, but I can no longer stay logged on. If I log on and tick the box to stay logged on, whenever I leave 'CM' and then return I have to log on again. whereas in the past I have not. However, we received a large computer update on Tuesday and a small one yesterday, so it might be due to them, we often have problems after updates. Additionally, I do not see any 'lock' symbol on my page. Unfortunately I am not very clever with PCs, so it is probably me. :(

Hi Geoff. I suspect the issue with staying logged in is a result of the new security. I suspect also that I'll be putting things back as they were later today!

ah - that explains why I had to log in.

I'll report back next time I reboot!

It is not an issue if there are other benefits from staying encrypted Dave.

have to log in even if the browser is closed for a bit as well as on reboot.

I don't have the green padlock, though it does say https - is that an Edge issue?

Solved it!

I experimented with re- bookmarking the site and I've stayed logged in on reboot!

 I'm in the process of trying to put things back as they were, so my apologies if odd things happen in the meantime!

(Although it was easy enough to sort out login issues, there were some more problematic and unforeseen issues such as YouTube videos not working.)
