Smart Casual or Optional Formal?

Postby Wansbrough » 25 Aug 2012 20:02

We are due to go on the Celebrity Constellation in just over a weeks time for a 2 night jaunt across the channel. On one of the 2 nights Celebrity have given an option to go formal.

September 5th - SMART CASUAL
September 6th - SMART CASUAL / OPTIONAL FORMAL

The only reason I know it is a formal night is because I have been watching the roll call on CC and a few of them have contacted the cruise line to ask? So as far as I am aware it will only be people monitoring that thread will have any idea of the dress code. My TA had no idea when I e-mailed to ask.

I am curious to know who would bother on such a short trip so have decided to run a poll.

No, afraid not- nor would I even bother with much of a dinner on either night, when there's so much else to do- you'd have to cram in so much that waiting on waiters just wouldn't appeal. It would be a bowl of soup here, and a sandwich there, throughout the day and evening. I love just wandering round ships, and taking 2 hours out each day of my 2 days to eat would be a waste of a lovely ship.

Looks like the answer Mike is to dress down and enjoy yourself :)

I definitely wouldn't bother. I am happy to go with the flow on a longer cruise but a formal on a 2 nighter? It's daft.

I can't believe that I am the only or that would bother! We don't get to many formal events so really enjoy the formal nights. ;)
Long may they continue! :D

I think it depends on the Ship Tiggy, I have bothered to go formal on a three nighter, but a two nighter? If it was advertised as Formal, then I would go Formal, but as they have given the choice, don't think many will adhere to it, so you could look out of place?

I don't feel comfortable in clothes I would not normally wear so only do formal if I have to.
I would not take formal wear on a two nighter, especially if there was a choice.

As much as we love formal evenings we wouldn't bother for 2 nights when there is an option given.

Just enjoy every minute of your jaunt.

I'll play the formal game if it's expected, but I prefer smart-casual.
