Is generalizability [and some would say even more than validity] not a hall mark of good research results and conclusion?

 I wonder... If I hadn't added the second paragraph, would you have responded to the first? ;)

This is a prime example of how NOT to use statistics.
Which when using its members for a survey are using an atypical sample.

By virtue of subsrcibing to Which they are a self selecting sample of like minded people.
Typical the sample is made up of the NIMBY types, mostly socioeconomic group B (those with money to spare for the subscription), and who have the character traits of being inclined to moan about everything combined with mild OCD (in that they need the organistaion of a table of comparisons to make decisions).

Which is very good at providing information on products but the results need to be tempered with the knowledge given above

I wouldn't trust a conclusion given by a Which table for any decision making process
Skiing comes 1st; Cruising a close 2nd

On all the forums and Facebook, Thomson seems to have many loyal followers. Don't you think that many of them have never even heard of the winner of the survey ? Surely the members of Which don't constitute the average British person who cruises

I couldn't agree more Pete. Back in the pre-cruising and pre-computing 70s, my passion was Hi-Fi. I remember Which? rating Amstrad highly for reasons that had nothing to do with quality of sound and it occurred to me that if they write rubbish about stuff you know about, they probably write rubbish about stuff you don't know about!

I'm rather late to this thread, but I came to say the same thing, albeit less eloquently.

I subscribed to Which for a while, but didn't much like what I saw. Outdated reviews for most categories, and not at all useful when making purchasing decisions.

As for their view on cruise lines... well I think the plethora of detailed reviews available online can offer a much more comprehensive overview of what people think.

It does not surprise me that Hurtigruten have come out top; they sometimes call at three ports on the same day thus pleasing triple number of passengers. They also allow you to board with your motor car and I am surprised the other lines are not yet copying this as it makes it very convenient with port excursions. They probably do need a sea screen cinema so you can get the nostalgic atmosphere of a "drive in" movie with a screen on the car deck.
