Budapest: Thermal Baths at Hotel Gellert

Our ship docked on the Pest side of the river under the Liberty Bridge. On the Buda side at the end of the Liberty Bridge is the Gellert Hotel with its Thermal Baths. That was our destination in a cold, windswept, sleety day in Budapest.

Entry to the baths is not cheap at €17,00pp. Kids pay full price once they have reached two years old. The ticket is valid for the whole day but just a single entry. It is not recommended for kids < 14 yo due to immaturity of their cardiovascular systems!!

The baths are a historical, architectural and ?therapeutic? marvel.

I was not sure what the etiquette of taking photos in such a place is, however as many others were taking photos, I took the approach that wide sweeping shots were ok.

On entry you are in the changing area and are given a cabana to change. The caban interior is basic with a couch and a small locker. The painful bit is that you don't get a key to the locker so you have to fetch the attendant with a master key to access it each time you wish to!!

The centrepiece is the swimming pool in neoclassical style architecture.

The upper balconies over the pool contain loungers and the restaurant with basic snacks is the far end.

While these baths were busy (helped by the awful weather) there was definitely a sense of faded opulence! A relic of auld decency!!!

There are two sets of double baths in the wings off the main swimming pool. We tried them all!

After hours of bathing, it was time for a cuppa and ice creams before heading out into the cold and making a mad dash for MS Sofia back across the Liberty Bridge.

Not the day we thought we would have in Budapest nevertheless a great day!

You will be there in November Jill - don't forget to pack the cossie in case you get inclement weather too! It was good to be able to do a Budapesty thing to do even with the weather so bad! There are outside baths but there was not a sinner present - obviously!

The only negative I would say about it, is that the staff were not at all nice!

I will certainly pay it a visit if as you say, the weather is not good. However, our last visit to Budapest was on a coach tour and we had so little time there. We will be staying overnight on our river cruise and the itinerary states we will be seeing ..........................
St. Matthias church, Fisherman's Bastion, Gellert hill (Buda), Hero's Square, Parliament building (Pest). The following day we will be flying home.
