Hebridean Adventure

Hebridean Adventure

Postby Dave » 03 Aug 2017 13:04

We're setting off on our Hebridean holiday very early tomorrow morning and it should be quite an adventure. I'm not sure how connected we'll be when we get to the Western Isles but I'm hoping to post regular updates to this topic in the form of 'digital postcards'. :D

We did our first cruise in the summer of 2004 and, since that successful taster, our main summer holiday has always involved cruising. This then will be our first non-cruising summer in 13 years.

In our pre-cruising days we had a fantastic motorbike and tent holiday in the Scottish Highlands and we know we love the area. We decided that this time we'd enjoy a little more comfort and so we've booked a week in a Hebridean croft -style house on South Uist followed by a week in a very modern cliff-top house on Lewis. There will be a ferry crossing in between and the arrangement means that we can get to most places by car during the two weeks. The drive to Uig from Whitstable will be broken by an overnight stay by Loch Alsh, and the return trip will be punctuated by a full day near Aviemore. The theme of the holiday will be exploring on foot!

And this is the very amazing house on Lewis (the one we're most excited about!):

Hopefully more will follow... 8-)

We arrived at Balmacara Guest House at 8.20pm after a 630 mile drive! We would have arrived sooner but roadworks, etc caused an hour's delay. Still, better late than never. :-)

It rained a fair bit on the way but the weather didn't affect our enjoyment of the absolutely spectacular Glen Coe, and the sun came out for Eilean Donan castle which is just a few minutes from here.

We had a very slow journey home from Lancaster last Monday. There were two very long sections of motorway roadworks (18 miles and 14 miles respectively). We had planned to use the M42/M40 route but the M40 was closed due to a serious accident and all traffic was diverted onto the already busy M1.

Have a great time in Bonny Scotland, hopefully the weather will stay fair. :)

Breakfast at the excellent Balmacara Guest House with views over Loch Alsh. :-)

We've met our first midges outside. We're hoping there are none on the islands. ;-)
