San Francisco and Las Vegas road trip

San Francisco and Las Vegas road trip

Postby vulcanxh558 » 15 Apr 2019 22:03

2018 saw the arrival of my 40th birthday and after 6 years of waiting since we last went to the US, the time came for just over 2 weeks in America.

Flew with BA and Virgin and the crew on the Virgin flight were amazing. I must say at this point that we did fly upper class as it was cheaper than economy for a bit of a round trip. Basically, £2000 each return economy direct from Heathrow or fly to Dublin, get the flight from there to Heathrow and onwards on one ticket, Upper Class, £1200 each return.

So we flew into San Francisco where we stayed for 3 nights and to be honest it was a bit of a disappointment. We did the usual things like Golden Gate Bridge, saw the seals, went on a tram, Lombard Street but by far and away the best bit was Alcatraz

And then the biggest bit. Drive from there, over to Mammoth Lakes for a couple of nights and then on to the bright lights of Vegas. All in all, just under 900 miles in 3 days and my god was it worth it, the views on the mountain roads were incredible. One of the days there we drove to Bodie which is an abandoned gold mining town. Its still looked after by rangers but it was a very odd place. Houses and shops were just as they left them (or so they same but i'm pretty sure some of it is staged)

Arrived in Las Vegas for 9 nights which was as brilliant as ever (and yes we gambled but came back losing money). Stayed at the Vdara which is a non smoking, non casino hotel. High Roller is a must and if youre feeling like an adrenaline rush, then the rides on top of the Stratosphere. Im a rollercoaster fan but Big Shot was quite scary being so high up and then shot even higher.

Vegas isn't for everyone, its full on and hard to describe to someone who hasn't been. If you're in doubt, there tons of other stuff to do apart from gambling. Just be prepared to walk, it's that huge, things look a lot closer than they actually are

Thanks for your review very interesting. I once had 4 days in San Fran and a couple of years later in Vegas. I preferred S.F myself, we are all different. Went on the Napa Valley wine train which was lovely. In Vegas we did a 4x4 trip out to the Grand Canyon. We stayed in the Stratosphere but gave the rides a miss. Chicken I know! Ruth

San Francisco and Las Vegas road trip

Good review, @vulcanxh558 - personally, I preferred SF to Vegas, the latter I found too bright, too loud and too OTT.

I think Las Vegas is a must-visit place even if visited only once. We really enjoyed San Francisco but our last visit was 20 years ago. Agree about Virgin fares we flew Premium economy to Miami and back Upper class. Cheaper than a Y+ return on BA.....and the service/food was much better!

Welcome to CM.
Interesting read - I was a little disappointed in SF - loved San Diego.
