Smilies and Emoticons

Postby Marrob 33 » 25 Mar 2020 15:25

I wanted to add a smilie tpo one of my posts, but could not see any. It may be because I am not doing something correctly.
Usually I start at the board Index, and scroll down to word Games, and work my way through each thread. I can't see anything to click and bring up the smilie page; though when I went to this page, "asking a question, I saw the Smilies to the right of the page. :?
I have a page of them printed out, but the lay out has a colon either side of the word description, eg; and if I do that on this forum the Smilie does not appear, only the characters I typed. Why???

Type your post, make sure the cursor is flashing after the words, click Full Editor, select smilie. It appears as you describe with colons and word but when it appears in the thread you get the smilie. If this makes sense (not techie)

Smilies and Emoticons

Postby Dave » 25 Mar 2020 16:46

I'm sorry, but I can't reproduce the problem - for me, the smilies appear to the right of the posting box as usual, which is good because I've not changed anything for years!

You say you have a page of smilie (codes) printed out, but there are no definitive rules about which string of characters produces which smilie (different forums use different codes). The reason  appears as  here is because we don't have an emoticon with that particular code. But if you put a colon either side of roll, you'll get...

:D

Thanks Camela, I forgot about the possibility of not using the full editor. Doh! ;)

Smilies and Emoticons

Postby Marrob 33 » 31 Mar 2020 15:31

Thank you Camela and Dave, you certainly provided me with a host of expressions, as long as I remember them. I will get out my Thesaurus to find alternative words to express the one I need.Perhaps I had zoomed in to enlarge the text and the smiles were too far over for me to see them.
At the moment I can't see where "Full editor" is, so maybe I'm a bit thick :? Just clicked the confused smile and only the first colon followed by the qyestion mark appeared, so I hope it worked. Marrob33
