Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi

Aside from over night stays in port our call at Abu Dhabi port must be the longest port of call we have ever done from 0900 to 2300 - 14 hours. You are not allowed to walk in the port of Abu Dhabi and the only way out or in is my taxi. Like Muscat we had booked a car and driver with Chauffeur Connection for 5 hours and we met our driver at the tented terminal in Port Zayed at 0920 to take us to our first stop of the day the Falcon Hospital.

Entrance to the Hospital is not cheap - 170AED - €40 for a 2 hour tour. Again kids under 4 were free!

THe hospital is quite a distance from town and we needed our full 40 minutes to get there to be in time for the 10 am tour. THey have just two tours per day.

Image

The tour began with an introduction to Falcons and Falconry and we were show their passports while being served chilled fruit juices.

Image

Then it was into the hospital proper with its fancy pre consultation waiting room.

One of the punters!

We then were shown into the day ward.

At this point a Falcon was masked down and anaesthetised.

Where it underwent a pedicure!

Then folk had a chance to hold a Falcon

Image

It was the high light of one girls trip!

Image

Next we were shown the carnivorous eating behaviour of Falcons

Image

We could see the operating theatres through a window as we passed along a corridor

Image

The Hospital has received numerous international tourism awards.

Image

Next was a visit to the Moulting Pens where Falcons were free to fly around is.

Image

Image

Finally we were taken to the Conference Centre and the Museum where chilled drinks were served.

A very different shore trip. We certainly thought it well worth the money and effort!

We returned to our car and driver and had a 20 minute drive to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque! THis make the SQB in Muscat look very ordinary in deed. It is stunning both inside and outside and is the highlight of Abu Dhabi. The marble inlay reminded me of the Taj Mahal!

I'm not sure if the inside was more impressive than the outside!

Our time was up with our driver at 1420 so we had just enough time for him to drop us at the Marina Mall where we had lunch and then walked around to the Emirates Palace Hotel. We were told that the Hotel and Mall were beside each other - they are but it still takes 40 minutes to walk from one to the other. Shorts are not allowed in the EPH so I had to don my longs before entering. EPH is managed by the Kempinski Group.

The interior lives up to its 5* image.

We ordered the famous EPH Cappucino

Image

...........................at €13 plus 10% tax and 6% service charge per cup!

But it was worth it! The gold flakes are 24 carat gold!!!

Image

It was a shame to drink it!!!!!!!

Image

Mai does seem to be drinking a lot of orange juice on this trip!!!!

Image

Even the colouring books provided were the 'super deluxe versions' with stickers and came in a shopping bag! Every girl needs a shopping bag!

Image

And finally the bill!

168AED or €43 for 2 coffees and an orange juice!

Image

We left the hotel - this was the view of the Etihad Towers across the road!

Image

.............and the sun was setting behind the hotel!

We then walked along the Corniche and Abu Dhabi's famous beach for about 2 miles before getting a taxi back to the ship in the nick of time for dinner.
