Khasab - 20 Jan 2015

Khasab is a port in Oman situated on the Musandam peninsula on the straits of Hormuz just 80km for Iran. I have a lonely planet printed in 1999 and at time the Musandam was not open to tourists being a military zone. Khasab is the gateway to the Musandam Fjords and this is the No. 1 shore excursion offered by the ship. On a glowing recommendation from Wansbrough we booked a half day Dhow cruise to the Fjords with a high chance of seeing Dolphins with Dolphin Khasab Tours. The cost was 50% of those offered by the ship and the 3 kids were free!

We met at the cruise terminal and 23 of us were transported in a minivan to the Dhow port about 10 minutes drive away!

Sailing from the Dhow port we had great views of Costa Serena

By our standards we had a lovely day but by Omani standards it was windy and cold and sure enough when on board we got very wet with spray! The company did have a great supply of towels to dry ourselves!

The Dhow has rugs on the floor and you sit on cushions and it is quite comfortable!

Teas / coffees and fresh fruit was served on board.

When we got into the Fjords proper the sea was much calmer but it was chilly but the views were stunning!

- another Dhow!

We stopped briefly at Telegraph Island for folk to swim but there were not any takers

It was a very suitable tour for the kids!

So what about the Dolphins! Well we had to make ourselves content with more scenery and less Dolphins.
We no way had anything near the prolific experience that Wansbrough had on the same tour last year - that said we did see some.

The trip lasted 2.5 hours and the Dhow returned us to the dock next to the ship where we boarded the ship for lunch.

Trip cost 150AED - €35.

We were back on board Costa Serena at 12:45 for lunch and left again at 1400 to visit Khasab Castle. We walked from the ship to the castle arriving at 1425 viewing a sign indicating the opening hours were from 0800 to 1600. As we were about to enter the manager stopped us saying he was closing at 1430! I showed him the sign and he just shrugged and asked why I didn't come in the morning!

Being met with such stubbornness and obstinacy I said - we have 5 mins to see it. We literally ran around it and took some photos!

We didn't pay for our 6 minute visit!

We then headed into Khasab Town centre and there was very little to see save a modern Mosque that was not open to non-Muslims. The port provided shuttle to the centre so we took this back. The town was pleasant and quite modern but has absolutely nothing of interest - not even shops! Dolphin Khasab Tours referred to it as the Souk - yes there was shopping but no a souk in the Muttrah Souk meaning of the word!

We sailed away with an amazing sunset with colour changes on the mountains!

Another great review with photos.

I can see why you said now that this is possibly one of your best cruises ever.

Your children must be amongst the best travelled kids for their age.

Shame you didn't get the same experience with the dolphins but looks like you made the most of your day as usual.

Lovely photos, Tom. Mai is looking like proper 'little girl' now instead if a Toddler. The girls are all gorgeous. They will be taking in the surroundings and culture, even if not properly aware of it. Xxxx
